A Message to Visitors
Welcome to Christ Episcopal Church!
We are glad that you are with us today. If you are looking for a place to call your spiritual home, we invite you to join us. We worship in a sanctuary built in 1893 that is filled with the prayers, hopes, and joys of several generations.
We are here because we found that in this gathering of people who are very different from one another, God’s love makes a place for us all. We hope that you have experienced this same welcoming presence on your visit. We invite you to fill out our visitor’s form found at the entrance to the church (ask an usher for help if the forms are not found) and return it to an usher or to Father Bob.
God’s Peace in the Welcoming,
Bob+

How to make the Sign of the Cross
Making the sign of the Cross is a feature of worship throughout Christendom, although its form varies from East to West. It can be made over other people and objects, or self-administered. In theWestern Church , including the Anglican Catholic Church, it is usually made with the right hand.

You begin by:
1. touching the forehead,
2. bringing the hand down to the “heart”,
3. touching the left shoulder and then bringing the hand across the chest to the right shoulder. In one fluid action you will trace the sign of the Cross upon yourself.
“+” indicates places where it is traditional to sign oneself with the cross.
“+++” at the Gospel Acclamation indicates where it is traditional to sign the cross with one’s thumb on the forehead, the lips, and the heart.
Permission to use this format for our service of Holy Eucharist was granted by the Bishops of the Diocese of Los Angeles.

THE HOLY EUCHARIST
Please stand, as you are able.
And Jesus repeated his greeting to the disciples: “Peace to you. Just as Abba sent me, I send you.” Then he took a deep breath and breathed into them saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit,”
Breathe on us breath of God.
Processional Hymn Please see the Hymn Board.
Blessed be God: + Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
And blessed be God’s Kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.Gathering Prayers of the People
The following prayer is adopted and modified from Intercessions for the Christian People.
Dear friends in Christ, as we gather for worship this morning, we bring with us our hope and concerns for the day and week ahead.
The list of people for whom our prayers have been requested are now offered.
I now invite you to offer to God those things which give joy to or burden your heart. For whom else and for what shall we pray?
The prayers continue
Risen One, compassionate and always present God,
Hear what our lips have spoken and our hearts harbor
as we pray in confidence for the world and the Church.
God of life, in gratitude and great joy we praise you for
The gifts of Christ’s resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, our Advocate.
On this day, give us hope.
Jesus “took a deep breath and breathed into them saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit,”
Breathe on us breath of God.
In this lively and life-giving season of Pentecost which brings conviction, repentance, forgiveness, confidence, the power of love and joy to all Christians, may we commit ourselves to work toward the unity of all who believe in Jesus.
Jesus “took a deep breath and breathed into them saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit,”
Breathe on us breath of God.
Honoring the gift of Christ’s risen body, may we rise to serve all those whose needs keep them from seeing themselves as the image of God;
Jesus “took a deep breath and breathed into them saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit,”
Breathe on us breath of God.
For all who journey from illness to health, from despair to hope, from grief to consolation, from loneliness to love; for all our sisters and brothers, that death may have no more power over us.
Jesus “took a deep breath and breathed into them saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit,”
Breathe on us breath of God.
Risen Christ, we believe you; all we heard is true.
You break bread; we recognize you,
you are the fire that burns within us; use us to light the world.
In your name we pray. Amen.

The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made one of us.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
+ We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Anniversaries, Birthdays & Other Thanksgivings
Watch over your children, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand, comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Peace

THE HOLY COMMUNION
Please stand, as you are able.
The priest offers the bread and wine using this traditional Jewish table prayer.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation:
through your goodness
we have this bread to set before you,
which earth has given and human hands have made.
It will become for us the bread of life.
Blessed be God forever.
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation:
through your goodness
we have this wine to set before you,
fruit of the vine and work of human hands.
It will become for us the cup of salvation.
Blessed be God forever.
The Great Thanksgiving
God be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Come to the table with thankful hearts.
We open our hearts to the Lord with thanks and praise.
Eternal God, in the abundance of your love
you caused all things to be;from dust and spirit
you have woven our humanity;
in all our wanderings
you never cease to call us to fullness of life.
You gave us Jesus, son of Mary,
the bread of life broken for the world;feeding us and feasting with us,
healing us and suffering with us;
Jesus’ dying and rising have set us free
from the poverty of sin
and the famine of death.
Therefore, with all whom you have made,
cherished and called, with all who hunger for your kingdom
and will not rest until your children are fed,
with the broken saints
and with the redeemed sinners of all ages,
we take up the song of your praise:
Sanctus (Bethancourt)
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
+ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
We ask that your Holy Spirit
will fall upon us + and upon these giftsthat these fragile, earthly things
may be to us the body and blood
of our lord and brother Jesus Christ;
who, on the night that he was betrayed,
gathered with his faltering friends
for a meal that tasted of freedom.
Calling them to his table,
Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said:“This is my body, which is given for you.
Do this to remember me.”
In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup, saying:
“This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me.”
As on that night, so here and now
Jesus offers himself in touch and tastebeyond what words can hold.
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.Christ will come again.
Therefore, in our eating and drinking
We are filled with the life-giving and life-affirming presence of Christ;
we proclaim him as creation’s host,
transforming poverty into plenty
in the reckless generosity of love.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
by whom and with whom and in whomin the unity of the Holy Spirit
all honor and glory be yours,
God of blessings, for ever and ever.
AMEN! The Lord’s Prayer
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!Come to the Table with thankful hearts.

THOUGHTS FOR OUR JOURNEY
“. . . God is not a static thing--not even a person--but a dynamic, pulsating activity, a life, almost a kind of drama. Almost, if you will not think me irreverent, a kind of dance. The union between the Father and Son is such a live concrete thing that this union itself is also a Person. I know this is almost inconceivable, but look at it thus. You know that among human beings, when they get together in a family, or a club, or a trade union, people talk about the 'spirit' of that family, or club, or trade union. They talk about its 'spirit' because the individual members, when they are together, really develop particular ways of talking and behaving which they would not have if they were apart. It is as if some sort of communal personality came into existence. But of course, it is not a real person: it is only rather like a person. But that is just one of the differences between God and us. What grows out of the joint life of the Father and Son is a real Person, is in fact the Third of the Three Persons who are God.”
C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
“When love has entirely cast out fear, and fear has been transformed into love, then the unity brought us by our savior will be fully realized, for all men will be united with one another through their union with the one supreme Good. They will possess the perfection ascribed to the dove, according to our interpretation of the text: One alone is my dove, my perfect one. She is the only child of her mother, her chosen one.”
Saint Gregory of Nyssa
A prayer by Julian of Norwich
In you, Father all-mighty, we have our preservation and our bliss.
In you, Christ, we have our restoring and our saving.
You are our mother, brother, and Savior.
In you, our Lord the Holy Spirit, is marvellous and plenteous grace.
You are our clothing; for love you wrap us and embrace us.
You are our maker, our lover, our keeper.
Teach us to believe that by your grace all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well. Amen.

O God, the Father of all, whose Son commanded us to love
our enemies: Lead them and us from prejudice to truth:
deliver them and us from hatred, cruelty, and revenge; and in
your good time enable us all to stand reconciled before you,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, you prepared your disciples for the coming of the
Spirit through the teaching of your Son Jesus Christ: Make
the hearts and minds of your servants ready to receive the
blessing of the Holy Spirit, that they may be filled with the
strength of his presence; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

“God hath divers ways into divers men. Into some he comes at noon, in the sunshine of prosperity; to some in the dark and heavy clouds of adversity. Some he affects with the music of the church; some, with some particular collect or prayer; some, with some passage of a sermon, which takes no hold of him that stands next to him. Watch the way of the Spirit of God into thee.”

Come down, O love divine,
seek thou this soul of mine,
and visit it with thine own ardor glowing;
O Comforter, draw near,
within my heart appear,
and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.
O let it freely burn,
till earthly passions turn
to dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
and let thy glorious light
shine ever on my sight,
and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.
Let holy charity
mine outward vesture be,
and lowliness become mine inner clothing;
true lowliness of heart,
which takes the humbler part,
and o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.
And so the yearning strong,
with which the soul will long,
shall far outpass the power of human telling;
for none can guess its grace,
till Love create a place
wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.
